A thrilling start sets the stage for 12 days of intense competition, featuring the best athletes in Boulder, Lead, Speed, and Paraclimbing. “Qualification was amazing, the crowd was just going wild. I’m just so happy, I have goosebumps everywhere,” said home favourite Julien Clémence after the first day of competition.

The IFSC Climbing and Paraclimbing World Championships 2023 is now underway, with 130 men diving into Boulder qualification action to determine the top 20 spots and semi-final placements. The climbers’ excitement marked the first day of competition following over 1.5 years of anticipation for the 18th edition of this prestigious event.

The qualifiers took place at Bern’s renowned PostFinance Arena and Curling Hall, and it was Japan who led the charge. Boulder World Cup series winner Anraku Sorato and teammate Ogata Yoshiyuki topped all five problems to progress in joint first position. They were closely followed by Germany’s Yannick Flohé and fellow Japanese climber Fujji Kokoro, and France’s Sam Avezou.

Home favourite Julien Clémence, cheered on by the vibrant local crowd, secured 15th place, commenting, “Qualification was amazing, the crowd was just going wild. I’m just so happy, I have goosebumps everywhere.”
