A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive and where difference is valued and celebrated. This is the world we want to forge. #EmbraceEquity on International Women’s Day.
On 8 March – and for more than 100 years already –, the world celebrates International Women’s Day (IWD) and with that the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. At the same time, though, people and organisations all around the world draw attention to inequality and discrimination.
Raising awareness of topics related to women’s rights and equality is and will be an important aspect for today’s society to move forward.
#EmbraceEquity
The motto of this year’s International Women’s Day is “Embrace Equity” and wants to draw attention to the difference between equality and equity. Equity recognises that each person has different circumstances, and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome – it means that everyone should be given what they need to be successful, not giving everyone the exact same thing and expect that this will make them equal.

IWD missions
IWD counts seven missions and one of them is related to the sports world: to celebrate women athletes and applaud when equality is achieved in pay, sponsorship and visibility.
The climbing community actually sets a good example as the number of female climbers is increasing. The IWD website describes the climbing community as an “inclusive space for women” and mentions an increase in media coverage of female climbers.
“And so the journey continues as we see ever more women-specific climbing events garnering strong interest. Product and clothing lines have become far more female-relevant. The number of climbing gyms, and their member diversity, has increased exponentially. And, the number of women at the crags is increasing too,” according the website International Women’s Day.
